The softish difference

Most throat drops are a hard shell you wait out

They crack against your teeth, they cut the roof of your mouth, and the menthol arrives like a slap. Pine Bros went a different way in 1870 and never changed it.

A hard drop

  • Cracks and splinters when you bite down
  • Sharp edges against an already raw throat
  • A menthol blast that overwhelms before it soothes

A softish drop

  • Gives under pressure, chews down gently
  • Gum acacia coats instead of scraping
  • No menthol, no gluten, nothing to brace for

Try it yourself

Press and hold each one

One of them gives. One of them is what you have been putting up with.

Press and hold

Macro photograph of a Pine Bros drop held lightly between a thumb and forefinger: a thick translucent cherry red oval disc with PINE embossed across its face, completely undeformed. The same drop squeezed hard, visibly squashed flatter and wider, dimpled where the fingertip presses and bulging at the sides, with the embossed PINE lettering distorting.

What makes it different

Built for throats that have work to do

It gives when you press it

A soft, gummy body instead of a hard shell. Nothing to crack, nothing sharp to work around while your throat is already sore.

Gum acacia does the coating

Imported tree sap used for thousands of years as an oral demulcent. It is also a prebiotic containing fiber.

Our story

A confectioner on 8th Street solved his own sore throat

In 1870 J. Herman Pine, a German immigrant, hung out a confectionery shingle on 8th Street above Walnut in Philadelphia and sold his first batch of Pine Brothers Glycerine Tablets. He had combined plant glycerin with gum acacia into one softish drop, trying to soothe his own throat.

He wrote that he had discovered something which would give quick throat relief to thousands afflicted as he was, and added that perhaps he would not make much money from it, but he could make people happy, and that mattered more. The recipe has been soothing American throats for 156 years since.
